Lets go over this quickly as to not bore you. Dances with Wolves is not a great film, Kevin Costner’s acting is mediocre at best as is his first time direction. Try watching it again and you will see how dated the movie seems only after 20 years. Some native Indians have said they didn’t like the portrayal at all. It’s a milquetoast Hollywood movie with a very bland way of telling it’s story.
Scorsese’s Goodfellas Is my favorite movie with The Good The bad And The Ugly a close 2nd. I loved how unpredictable it was when I first saw it, I loved the feel of the movie from the tracking shots to the sizzling rock soundtrack. I love how it keeps making me think about it long after I’ve seen it. Ray Liotta Was amazing in a very underrated performance. GoodFellas is a nuclear explosion of creative film making.
The two films shouldn’t even be in the same medium. And that’s the overall problem with the Oscars. It’s a popularity contest. It doesn’t mean one film is necessarily better than the others. If it did then How Green Was My Valley would be the most talked about film in history and Citizen Kane would be relegated to obscurity. Clear enough?
